reformat. use your windows boot disc. insert the cd, restart your computer, choose the option to boot from cd, then choose to install a fresh version of windows. youll then be looking at a partiition screen delete all the partitions on the harddrive(there is instructions on screen how to do so) and there you go youve deleted everything on your harddrive.What is the best way to clear off the harddrive of a computer before recycling it?

Take the hard drive out of the computer and destroy it with a hammer.
If you can put in as much as jpeg and avi files into it and then reformat it at least 7 times, yep, pretty much is clean. That is if you want to safe the hdd so somebody else can use it.
formatting does not clean the hard drive all it does is write over it and info still can be recovered by a recovery software go to www.killdisk.com and download the free soft ware that will totally clean the hard drive and take it back to the day it was made
